Three hundred people assembled outside the Ministry of the Interior today, in continued protest against road construction through the protected lava field Gálgahraun, where several conservationists were arrested yesterday. Road construction is being pushed through even though two supreme court rulings regarding the legality of the route itself are still pending.

During the short and peaceful protest, the signature green flags of Iceland’s environmentalists were waved. The crowd sung Icelandic classics “Hver Á Sitt Fegra Föðurland” (“Each Owns His Own Fatherland”) and “Ísland Ögrum Skorið” (“Iceland Above Others”), before chanting “where is the minster?” and “out with the minister.”

A petition was given to a staff member of the ministry, as Minister of Interior Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir was reportedly in the East of Iceland.
